1st Inter-Church Charity Treasure Hunt

1 November 2009 3 Comments

The treasure hunt is from Alor Star to Changlun.

The 1st Inter-Church Charity Treasure Hunt was mooted by Bro Dorairaju of the Trinity Baptist Church. The primary reason for organizing such an event was to raise funds to manage the Christian cemetery at Jalan Sultanah which was in a bad shape.

The first meeting was held on the 12th of August 2009 at the Trinity Baptist Church. The three churches involved in organizing this event were the Trinity Baptist Church, Wesley Methodist Church and the Full Gospel Church. The committee that was set up agreed to open this event to all the churches in and around Alor Star. The fees charged for participating in this event was sufficient for the hunt only. The funds needed for the cemetery would come from the advertisements and contributions placed in the Souvenir Program Book .

The target was to raise at least RM 60,00.00 to be used for the backfilling of the low areas at the cemetery, construction of a concrete perimeter drain and a new fence and gate . By the 13th of October the amount raised was RM 59,950.00.

The date for the treasure hunt was fixed on the 30th of October 2009. There was good response from the churches with 33 cars participating. The participants were more than 100. We also had participants from Sg. Petani, Johor, Trengganu and two from Sydney, Australia.

All the participants gathered at the Trinity Baptist Church for the flag off on Friday, 30th October. The route took the participants through Alor Star, to Kuala Kedah, Gunung Keriang, Jitra and to CTC at Changlun.

There were some who lost their way but managed to find their way back. Some took it easy and had time to eat ‘wan tan mee’ during the hunt. One team drove all the way to the airport because the clue mentioned Firefly! There were those who thought they were in the lead and were lamenting it was lonely at the top only to find 5 other cars had already reached the end point when they got there!

All in all, it was a fun outing for church goers, most of whom (including the writer) had never been on such an adventure. There was good fellowship at the dinner which was attended by some of the local pastors as well.

The Wesley Methodist Church had a good representation led by Pastor Lee Peng Chiat.

The biggest surprise was the winner of this event – Pastor Lee Peng Chiat and his team.

We also managed to get the 3rd, 6th and 7th placing in this event. Saturday was shopping time and you could see the cars loaded with shopping bags on their way home. With the money from this event, we will be able to start work once the design for the gate, fence and the layout for the graves are approved.

The final amount raised is around RM70 000. Praise God!
